This is the 27th year Free Flu Shot Saturday has been hosted by the News Sentinel's Empty Stocking Fund, a non-profit that provides thousands of East Tennessee families with food and toys for the holidays. Learn more at esfknox.orgThe annual event takes place on one Saturday in the fall and provides free influenza immunizations to anyone in the Knoxville area who is interested. (Due to COVID-19, this year's event will be a drive-thru event. Masks are required.) Since the program's inception in 1991, more than 228,000 East Tennesseans have been immunized and over $870,000 has been raised for the Empty Stocking Fund.

The event relies heavily on corporate and foundation donations to purchase the medical supplies and serum and is organized and staffed by medical volunteers under the direction of Dr. Charlie Barnett. Volunteers from several local Rotary clubs and the News Sentinel assist as well. The BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation has been a major donor to the program throughout the years, along with Summit Medical Group and the Knoxville Area Rotary Club. While donations are accepted and appreciated from those receiving shots, they are not required. Anyone participating in the event interested in making a donation can do so by cash, check or credit card.
